Prealgebra Custom Edition for Los Angeles City College Margaret L Lial Diana L Hestwood 9781269925013 Books

Love this book! I am a former middle school math teacher turned homeschooling mom to 4 kiddos. My oldest daughter (5th grade) finished Right Start Math level E last year. We did some of RS Geometry this year but it was a bit tedious for her so I wanted to mix in some prealgebra. This is a perfect transition. The book has a great layout, plenty of problems (we do odds only unless she is having trouble with a topic and I plan to use the evens as review later in the year), a review section and test for each chapter. I was involved in district text selection when I was teaching so I had a chance to compare many different texts and this is hands down my favorite. Many of the commercial publishers have texts that are too busy visually for the majority of students. Kids get lost in the graphics, colors, and asymmetrical layouts and have trouble discerning what is important or even what they should be reading. Not so here. Also, the word problems are actually interesting. I have seen so many books where the word problems are so contrived and fake that they don't really seem to be good examples of the topic, or where the authors talk down to the students. Lial's prealgebra has none of these flaws. The explanations and examples are clear, uncluttered, straightforward, and presented in an authoritative, yet understandable tone. My daughter is able to read and complete problems independently about 95% of the time because the text is so well written. I grabbed this as a used copy and the price was so reasonable that I let my daughter complete problems right in the text. I plan to grab copies for my other children as well as to purchase Lial's other books as the grow into them.

It's a book
What I like about this book was the application on it for practicing. If you get a question wrong, you can either choose "help me solve this" and it will walk you through solving it and/or choose "another like this" and you will get a question that is similar to the one you are having trouble with. Really good book!
I like this book because it has a lot of problems. There are simpler and challenging ones for anyone who wishes to challenge a student who is new to pre algebra.
Using this book to teach my 7th grader at home. Explains things clearly and easily. My only problem is that the answers for all the problems aren't in the back, nor are they in the solutions manual I bought. So I end up having to do some of the problems, which is just time consuming.
Being that it has been more years than I care to confess to since I took a math class and am pursuing my Bachelor's after all these years, I decided that I needed to review Pre-Algebra before taking an intermediate Algebra class this upcoming semester.

This book is well-structured and explains in just enough detail what steps need to be taken with clarity. Even if math is not your favorite class, this book will help ease the pain.
We're homeschooling our 12 yr old for the first time this year and I needed a Math text that was simple enough for me to understand yet not so easy my son would be bored. I had used another Math text written by Lial for a college level class and was very impressed. This text explains concepts and procedures in simple language and has numerous examples to use. I would recommend buying the accompanying Solutions Manual too. I have had up to college level Calculus and my son has been in public school for 6 yrs so we may have a little stronger Math background than others, but I do think most homeschooling parents would be able to use this book successfully. The concepts are written simply and have a lot of explanations and helpful hints in the "Note" boxes. Example Purple Note box "One way to remember which symbol to use is that the "smaller end of the symbol" points to the "smaller number (number that is less). 1 < 4, 0 > -3.
Very practical information and strategies to memorize steps. We'll be getting into Factoring soon (ugh!) and this text breaks it down so that even I can enjoy it.
